Was This Elvis’ Best Birthday Present Ever?

Perhaps you have seen this photo on the internet. I run into it from time to time, but nobody has ever included a caption or text explaining the story of Elvis and this old car. Continue reading

The Evolution of Elvis Tribute Continues

Reference books state that Elvis gave performances in 79 cities in 1956. How many cities do you think hosted Elvis Tribute Artists in 2011? My guess is that it could be ten times that number. Continue reading

Ferlin Husky and Elvis

We lost another of Elvis’ old musical buddies this week. Ferlin Husky was a successful country singer based in Memphis who scored two huge cross-over pop hits “Gone” and “On the Wings of a Dove.” He met Elvis in 1955 when the young swivel-hipped singer was added to several packaged tours throughout Mississippi and the south. The Most Significant Month In Elvis' History

Back in late 2005, I was trying to think of something to write for the upcoming Birthday Tribute Issue of Elvis International magazine. I always try to submit something for each issue, and Darwin Lamm, the publisher, likes to do anniversary themes. So, I checked out what went on with Elvis fifty years earlier in January, 1956. Is Elvis' White Knabe Piano a White Elephant?

For the second time in 18 months, a prized Elvis collectible has failed to garner the minimum bid set by the auctioneers. Of course, it was a pretty steep minimum – a half-million dollars. Continue reading

A Belated Look at Elvis' Most Expensive Jumpsuit

Back in early August, the Elvis websites with news sections all carried the story about his famous Peacock Jumpsuit selling for $300,000. I wanted to find a different twist on the story to do on ElvisBlog. Continue reading

Images in Gold Lamé

The famous picture of Elvis in his gold lamé suit is one of the most iconic images in the world. For years I have been collecting other photos of Elvis in that suit, and you probably haven’t seen most of them before. So, let’s take a look at the most interesting ones. Continue reading

Elvis Tribute Goes Big Time — Part 2

Back at Elvis Week 2002, the best entertainment values in town were the two Elvis Midnight Blues Jams at the Daisy Theater on Beale Street. These were totally misnamed, because there was no blues music performed at either show. It didn’t matter. They were so much fun, anyway. Continue reading

VANCOUVER CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF AN ELVIS RIOT

Elvis lore is filled with stories of fans freaking out at his concerts in the 50s, but the biggest ruckus didn’t happen in this country. That honor goes to the Canadian city of Vancouver in British Columbia. Elvis’ concert at Empire Stadium on August 31, 1957, turned into a real mess. Reporter John Kirkwood wrote in the morning newspaper The Sun, “Vancouver teenagers…transformed into writhing, frenzied idiots of delight. Continue reading

ELVIS AND JOHNNY RIVERS

I love doing a little digging to find out what kind of connection Elvis had with other rock & rollers. In the case of Johnny Rivers, it goes all the way back to early 1955, before Elvis was a big star, and before Johnny Rivers was Johnny Rivers. At that time, he was Brooklyn-born John Ramistella, a twelve-year-old growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Continue reading
