Slow Year for Elvis Allusions in the Movies

Every August I enjoy going to GoMemphis.com and reading John Beifuss’ annual report on movies that contain something, anything, about Elvis in them. For example, it could be Elvis jumpsuits, or his iconic sunglasses, or anything else associated with him. It can be an Elvis song, a picture of him, or a character trying to sound like him. And sometimes, his name is used in the dialog of the movie. Continue reading

Elvis and the Island of Misfit Gifts

Do you remember the Christmas video Rudolph: The Island of Lost Toys? I thought there might be a parallel in Elvisworld. Over the past fifty-five years, there have been many, many Elvis products introduced – and some were pretty crummy. I know, because I’ve received some of them as Christmas presents. So, if there was an Elvis Island of Misfit Gifts, here are some strange items that should be there. Continue reading

Elvis: The Early Years

This is the front cover of the latest book of Elvis photographs by Alfred Wertheimer. His iconic 1956 photos of Elvis have appeared in several other books, DVDs, calendars, and more products than you can count. I had the good fortune to be selected by Al Wertheimer to write the forward for Elvis: The Early Years. Continue reading

Elvis Mr. Potato Head, Part 2 and 3

Most Elvis websites and blogs noted the announcement of Elvis Mr. Potato Head back in June. Some were actually hostile to the idea, but I liked it and said so. I may be old, but I like my Elvis toys, and this is a good one. Continue reading

Elvis T-Shirt Review 2 — Ladies Tees

All summer long, a two-year old article has been among the daily top ten most popular ElvisBlog articles, often in the top five. It is “Elvis T-Shirt Review,” and I have wondered why it is so popular. I guess Elvis fans were thinking about T-shirts during the summer season. Continue reading

Random Thoughts on the Remastered Elvis On Tour

Like many other Elvis fans, I headed to my local multiplex theater Thursday night to take in the “One Night Event” showing of the new and improved Elvis On Tour. My ticket cost $13.50, but I got my money’s worth. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Continue reading

Mr. Potato Head Elvis — Yikes!

I told my wife that they were coming out with an Elvis Mr. Potato Head, and she replied, “Oh God, what’s next.” I think I have the answer to that question, but first let’s take a look at the latest in themed Elvis collectibles. Continue reading

Loving You — Starring Scotty, DJ, and Bill (Plus Elvis, of Course)

I recently found something interesting on the website for a Rock and Roll memorabilia auction. It was a movie theater lobby card from Elvis’ 1957 film Loving You. Most Elvis movie cards and posters show pictures of him with one or more of his lovely female co-stars, but this one included Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana, his original guitarist and drummer. Continue reading

Silver Elvis

There is a precious metals store just a few miles from my home, so I dropped in to see what they had for sale. I quickly learned that silver comes in little 1 oz. bars and rounds produced by dozens of independent mints around the country. And they come with every conceivable image minted on them. Even Elvis!! Continue reading

Cakes — Elvis' 75th Birthday Photo Review

I’m going to have fun checking out what a number of my favorite websites do to celebrate Elvis’ 75th birthday. I’m sure there will be some great retrospectives and well-written eulogies. That’s fine, but I’m not going to get so serious about it. Let’s just start with the official Graceland 75th Birthday Cake and expand from there. Continue reading
