ElvisBlog Mini-Nuggets #19

We haven’t done Mini-Nuggets since March 2014, but Elvis’ 80th birthday has provided some short subjects to report.

Record Number of Hits for ElvisBlog:

ElvisBlog Results on Google Analytics

On January 1, I checked Google Analytics to see how well ElvisBlog did for the year. 147,000 people (users) visited the site, resulting in 279,991 pageviews (hits). That’s an average of 2,800 users a week, a gain of 30% over the 2013 results. Definitely a good year.

Which makes the results in the graphic above even more remarkable. Yesterday, on what would have been Elvis’ 80th birthday, ElvisBlog had nearly 2,600 people visit the site. Wow. I hope I’m still around to see the results on Elvis’ 100th birthday.

Elvis’ Movie Costars Pass Away:

Mary Ann Mobley with Elvis in Girl Happy

When time permits, we will take a deeper look at two late actresses who appeared with films with Elvis. Mary Ann Mobley (Girl Happy, Harum Scarum) died on December 19, 2014.

Donna Douglas and Elvis in Frankie and Johnny

Donna Douglas (Frankie and Johnny) passed away on New Year’s Day, 2015.

Elvis’ leading ladies have been a staple for print and video interviews about him for decades. Has there ever been an Elvis Week without one or two of them being “Special Guests” for talks, panel discussions, and autograph sessions?

Donna Butterworth with Elvis Presley in Paradise, Hawaiian Style

Well, the list is getting short, and you have to wonder what authors, journalists and EPE will do when Elvis’ female costars are all gone. Now we have a hint. In celebration of Elvis 80th birthday, an article in the Boone, NC Mountain Times featured an interview with Donna Butterworth who was ten-years-old when she appeared with Elvis in Paradise, Hawaiian Style. You are going to see more of this.

.

Peanut Butter ‘N Banana Ice Cream:

Baskin-Robbins Peanut Butter 'N Bananna Ice Cream

I received an email from the PR firm representing Baskin-Robbins telling me about their new flavor to celebrate Elvis’ 80th Birthday. It will be available for the entire month of January, and it is described as banana-flavored ice cream with a chunky peanut butter ribbon. They are sending me two $31 gift cards – one to use to sample it and write a review. I expect to like it, but I did have a bad experience at Elvis Week 2007 when I tried peanut butter and banana coffee, and it was lame.

The other gift card will be offered as the prize in an Elvis Caption Contest which I will post in a couple of days.

.

The Elvis Auction at Graceland:

Auction at Graceland

The auction last night was a huge success, highlighted by the 1953 acetate of Elvis’ first recorded songs “My Happiness”/”That’s When Your Heartaches Begin.” The pre-auction estimate was for $75-100,000, but it went for $300,000! That’s got to be the highest priced record ever. Let’s see a record by Michael Jackson, or the Beatles, or Mariah Carey top that.

There were 67 items up for auction, so it will take two or three blogs to cover all the interesting elements of this Elvis 80th birthday event, and I’ll get them posted as soon as possible.

Merry Christmas, Elvis

Christmas Ornament Elvis Santa

Perhaps you’ll be taking a break from the presents and music and food, and check in to see the annual ElvisBlog Christmas post. This time of the year you are probably thinking more about Santa Claus than you are about Elvis, but here’s a look at something combines them both – Elvis wearing a Santa hat.

Thank you, thank you very much

Elvis Thanksgiving 2014

Thanksgiving and Elvis. Three times in the past five years, I found enough photos connecting Elvis and Thanksgiving to create ElvisBlog posts. This year, because it’s the time when we all give thanks, it seemed like a good idea to Google ‘Thank You, Elvis’ and see what came up. With luck, there would be some pictures that could be used in another Thanksgiving post.

Well, not exactly. What Google did find were dozens of images containing the famous Elvis phrase, “Thank you. Thank you very much.” So, here are some of the best.

The Elvis Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Announcement of Elvis Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Did you see this announcement on Graceland.com a couple of weeks ago? I’m going to enter it, and maybe I’ll win the $100 prize.

2014 Elvis Pumpkin Contest Prize

Too bad I didn’t enter the first Elvis Pumpkin Contest back in 2012 when the prize was $250. Wonder why they cut it back?

 2012 Elvis Pumpkin Contest Prize

ElvisBlog usually has an Elvis/Halloween post each year, and some of them have featured pumpkins carved with his image. The first was back in 2008, so unless you dig deep into the archives, you likely haven’t seen most of these. So here is a look at the best of the Elvis Pumpkins from those posts.

Outstanding Elvis carved pumpkin

I wanted to start with this one for two reasons. First, it is just an outstanding design. And, second, it is an example of what seems to be becoming a lost art – cutting completely through the shell to make the image.

Elvis Pumpkin 2

This is equally outstanding work, but here only the outer dark shell is carved away. Light inside the pumpkin shines through the thinner yellow membrane to show off the design. Here are nine more designs using this technique.

Elvis Pumpkin 10

Elvis Pumpkin 11

Here’s yet another carving technique where the design is revealed in relief by cutting away the thick pumpkin shell to different depths.

Elvis Pumpkin 12

The next design seems to be some advanced technique that involves copying an Elvis image to the pumpkin and possible even adding colors. The white on the jumpsuit just doesn’t look like something you get naturally from the pumpkin. Kind of seems like cheating.  (Editor’s note:  The “seems like cheating” reference here was in bad judgement.  I should have quit after “just doesn’t look like something you get naturally from the pumpkin,” because that is true.  This design was carved on a foam craft pumpkin bought at Michael’s Hobby Shop.  Check out the comment below from the carver, Bryan Moore, who describes the whole process and many other interesting things.  Sorry, Bryan.)

Elvis Pumpkin 13

So, we’ve seen four different techniques for Elvis pumpkin decorating. I have a fifth one that I will submit to the contest.

It helps if you own your own personal granite Elvis bust. Wish me luck.

Happy 4th of July, Elvis

Elvis Red and Gold 4th of July

Back in 2009, I posted the first ElvisBlog pictorial salute to Elvis on the 4th of July. It was supposed to be an annual thing, but I notice I skipped last year for some reason.

Notice how Elvis has on his American Eagle jumpsuit in the above picture, and there is an image of a real eagle, too. Over the years, four other of our Elvis 4th of July pictures have also contained eagles. Of course, the American Eagle jumpsuit shows up in many of these patriotic pictures, including three this year.

Elvis in4th of July Hat

This one is more fun. It looks like Elvis has been invited to an Alice in Wonderland tea party.

Lisa in Red White and Blue

I love this photo. Look at little Lisa all dressed up in red, white and blue.

Soldier Elvis 4th of July

These designs with Elvis in uniform could work with several holidays, but it says “Happy 4th of July,” so it belongs here.

Elvis 4th of July Kaleidoscope

Another good use of the American Eagle jumpsuit in this busy, but colorful, kaleidoscope design. This must have taken a lot of time to put together.

Elvis Happy Fourth of July

I kind of like the simplicity of this one.

Elvis 4th of July Penant Flag

I think this is one of those hanging pennants you can buy. It should last forever if you bring it out just once s year for a few days.

Red White and Blue Graceland

How about Graceland decked out in red, white, and blue? I hope it’s not going to be like the Christmas decorations that stay up until January 8. Too long.

Elvis God Bless America

The last American Eagle jumpsuit in the 4th of July tribute to Elvis. (The last picture of Elvis, too)
